Our History

In 1904, in the rustic Panthersville Community of South DeKalb County, 17 charter members gathered in the living room of the home of their new pastor, J.T. Gazaway, to establish the Panthersville Christian Church. In March 1906 the young congregation acquired an acre of property for its first facility on what would ultimately become Candler Road. In 1913, the name was changed to Mount Carmel Christian Church, representing the most prominent geographic feature in The Holy Land. Through its' first 15 years five dedicated “part-time” ministers served the growing church and community.

William Gordon Kelly was selected in 1919 as the minister, and for the next 31 years, “Preacher Kelly” served the Lord in this “part-time” role. During his tenure, the church continued to proclaim the gospel message and in 1928 the old framed structure was replaced with a new brick edifice (which still stands on the same location).

In February 1950, Jack Ballard, at the age of 21, stood before 200 people at Mount Carmel and was installed as the first full-time minister. Under Jack's leadership, the church prospered as “the Lord added”, building a second annex addition in 1953 (which required successive expansions over the ensuing years). Due in great measure to the generosity (initial gift of 7.5 acres) of the R.L. Mathis family (Mathis Dairy), the church dedicated a brand new facility on Rainbow Drive on March 30, 1969. At that time, the Atlanta Journal reported “How a Little Old Country Church in Ga. Grew to a Giant” (100 to 3,700) with “Independence, Warmth, Gospel Preaching ....”

In addition to its many other ministries to meet the spiritual and social needs of the congregation and community, Mount Carmel Christian School was established in 1972 to provide a quality curriculum founded on academic excellence in a Christ-centered learning environment (a ministry which continues to mold and change young lives to this very day!)

The church continued to be a bright beacon for Christ for the next 20 years at the Rainbow Drive location. Then, in 1989 the church family of Mount Carmel relocated and dedicated to the Glory of God its' current house of worship situated on 20 acres at 6015 Old Stone Mountain Road in Stone Mountain. From the top of Stone Mountain, you can see a lovely view of the church.

Jack Ballard continued to serve till 1994 (44 years!) After three succeeding senior ministers (and a couple of interim preachers), in 2012 the Lord led another young and Godly man, Art Stansberry, to accept the call to this historic pulpit! As The Lord through Art is leading us to WORSHIP, GROW and SERVE, we are dedicated to reaching our community, nation and world with the life-changing message of Jesus Christ! And, once again we are thrilled to see the Lord “adding to His church”!

As was recorded on the occasion of our 100th anniversary in 2004:

“The God who was with the church yesterday and in yesteryear is the Lord of today and tomorrow!”
